Last Friday, a gay man was murdered in A Coruña, Spain. His name was Samuel, and he was 24. He was beaten to death by THIRTEEN people as they yelled and called him homophobic slurs. Yet some politicians and celebrities still dare to say that it wasn’t a hate crime. Eversince, there has been more aggressions towards gay and trans people.

Spain is counted as one of, if not the most LGBTQ friendly country in the entire world. We are the country with the highest percentage of non-heterosexual population in Europe. We were the third country to legalize same sex marriage, we have several laws protecting us and we are about to approve the most progressive ‘Trans Law’ in Europe. And I, as a Spaniard lesbian, have never felt unsafe for being gay. Not until now.

LGBTQphobic aggressions have been on the uprising lately, and as much as certain far right political party keeps saying that they are not to blame, they are. Because they keep openly promoting violence towards us, wanting to take away the rights many of our people fought to get. They’re fucking fascists, and so are their voters. And the media is also to blame for promoting them.

We’d count on the police to defend us, but the other day there was a protest for this same cause and they ended up beating people up for no reason. As always. So instead, many of us are thinking about getting self-defense classes or tools.

Cishet people (mostly cishet men): spread this. We know not all of you are like this, but you are the potential aggressors. Even if you aren’t that kind of person, if you do nothing in situations like this, you are part of the problem. The best you can do to help is educating yourselves and the people around you. Education is the key, if we want things like this to stop.

We aren’t going to stop. They want us scared and back in our closets but that’s not going to happen. We aren’t going to be silenced, and we’re not going to stop until those murderers spend the rest of their lives in prison.
